HL7 is a standardization organisation that was created in 1987 with the aim to facilitate systems integration
within hospitals. Over the years the scope of activities has broadened to all kinds of standards related
to data integration within healthcare.
Several of the HL7 work items form the basis of ANSI or ISO standards; various HL7 work items have also been recognized
as official standards (e.g. in the Netherlands, by NEN) or de facto standards (e.g. in Germany, by DIN).
|
HL7 consist of the following parts:-
- v2.x: Version 2
- V3: Version 3
- CDA: Clinical Document Architecture
- CCOW: Clinical Context Object Working Group
- Arden Syntax
- LOINC: Logical Observations Identifier, Names and Codes

The imaging standard DICOM was created in 1983 by a group of vendors and users (ACR-NEMA) of radiology modalities.
The standard has been extended to cover all areas related to the transportation, storage and display of medical images. Details related to the DICM standard can be found at the
Dicom specific site of NEMA.
IHE ("Integrated Health Enterprise") is a framework architecture for the integration of DICOM and HL7 compliant
applications. See the site of RSNA, IHE-Europe or HL7 for details.
EDIFACT
EDIFACT ("Electronic data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport") is used
as a messaging standard in healthcare. The definition of EDIFACT directories and the MEDxxx relevant to healthcare
can be found at the
UN/EDIFACT website.
Another excellent generic reference is edifactory.
