The role of HL7 country organizations (affiliates) has changed over the past five years, the importance of being a platform for the exchange of experiences has increased, whilst their role in the creation of localized specifications has diminished....

HL7 v3 RIM Act Essentials: moodCode

The semantic interpretation of the Act class in the HL7 version 3 RIM heaviliy relies on one of its properties: its mood. This whitepaper attempts to explain the concept of mood - a lot of examples are provided in the process. Related concepts such as the ActClass, ActStatus and the impact of the NegationIndicator are also covered....

Implementing HL7 version 3 - the book

An "Implementing HL7 version 3" book - just what would it look like? We'll probably know before the end of this year, because that book is about to be written. There are a couple of books for HL7 version 3 modellers, but there are none for HL7 v3 software implementers and architects....

IHE: an implementation framework based on messaging standards, a whitepaper

The IHE (Integrating the Health Enterprise) initiative offers implementation profiles for transactions used to communicate clinical data within the healthcare enterprise. These implementation profiles are created by a consensus process among professionals; the profiles are based on existing messaging standards such as HL7 and DICOM. Conformance to IHE profiles is tested by means of testing tools and a live system-to-system testing event called the Connectathon. A European connectathon took place in 2007 in Berlin, Germany....

Adding openness to a closed world

Traditionally information architects model information using a closed world assumption (when one models using relational or OO principles). Increasingly www-inspired description languages (e.g. OWL) are used, which are based on open world assumptions. These two worlds will have to be bridged to take full advantage of the new possibilities....

The HL7 MIF - Model Interchange Format

The Model Interchange Format (MIF) is a set of XML formats used to support the storage and exchange of HL7 version 3 artefacts as part of the HL7 Development Framework. It is the pre-publication format of HL7 v3 artefacts used by tooling. It is also the formal definition of the HL7 metamodel. The MIF can be transformed into derived forms such as UML/XMI or OWL....

Internationalization of HL7

At the HL7 working group meeting this week a number of issues were discussed related to the 'internationalization' of the HL7 organization. On the one hand the work of the HL7 organization is becoming ever more global in nature, whilst on the other hand HL7 will have to ensure that its standards solve local interoperability issues....
